How to properly remove rust from clothes?

Probably, every person at least once in his life faced the problem of cleaning his clothes from rust stains. Most often, rusty marks appear after drying things on heating radiators, which have areas with peeled paint. Also, stains are formed from small metal objects that you forgot to pull out of your pockets during washing. Another reason for the appearance of rust marks on clothing is direct contact with rust.

There are times when even the most advanced technologies do not cope with stains of this nature. Some products are used exclusively for cleaning white fabrics, and some need only be used as soon as possible after contamination. It turns out that it is not always convenient for us to use them.

For white fabrics, regular bleach containing chlorine will work. To provide first aid to a stained wardrobe item, you can use gel-structured stain removers. Due to their consistency, these gels, unlike powdered products, act gently and at a deeper level in the tissue fibers.

First of all, you need to remove excess rust, and then rub a small amount of gel into the dirty area, if necessary, treat the stain with a brush or sponge. Leave the item for the time indicated in the instructions so that the gel is better absorbed. Wash the garment with a regular detergent, preferably with your hands. And if you didn’t succeed in removing the dirt on the first try, try repeating the process again.



What to do at home?

For years, our people have been collecting methods and recipes aimed at removing rusty stains from things, in case special cleaning tools are not available:

  • Tomato juice. Treat the stain with ripe tomato juice, wait about 20 minutes and rinse. Rinse the product with water and send it to the washing machine for the normal wash cycle.
  • Oxalic acid. If you have crystallized oxalic acid in stock at home, you need to take and dissolve a couple of acid crystals in 1 teaspoon of water at room temperature. Dip a swab in the resulting liquid and thoroughly saturate the area exposed to rust. You need to rub until all traces of contamination disappear. After the procedure, rinse the product thoroughly in cool water.
  • Glycerin and chalk. Take equal parts of chalk, glycerin and water, mix until pasty. Apply a generous amount of paste to the problem area and rub in thoroughly. After this treatment, the fabric will be cleaned very quickly. This method is also suitable for anti-rust stains on colored fabrics.
  • Ammonia. Perfect for removing tough stains from white items. Soak a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol and treat the affected area. Leave the treated area for a while, then wash the product.
  • Lemon. Cleaning fabrics with this recipe is recognized as the best way to remove rust marks. This method is suitable for all materials. Take a gauze cloth and put some lemon pulp in it, distribute this mass over the dirty area, and then warm this area with an iron. To completely remove the stain, repeat the process again if necessary.
  • Lemon juice. Lemon juice is used in a similar way to pulp. Wet the contamination abundantly with lemon juice, cover it with a paper napkin and iron it with an iron. If the stain has not completely disappeared, re-treatment is possible. To clean thin fabrics, heating is not necessary, just soak the problem part of the thing well with fresh water, set it aside to soak for 15 minutes, and then send it to the wash.
  • Dish detergent and glycerin. Take equal amounts of ingredients. Mix, distribute the resulting product over the problematic part of the product and set aside the thing. Wash after a few hours of absorption.
  • Toothpaste. Suitable in case of lack of all other funds. Mix a little toothpaste with water until the consistency of sour cream, apply on the stain, leave for 40 minutes.

Remove stains from white fabric

White things require special care. Even the tidiest people are not immune from various accidents, and each of us can find traces of rust on a shirt, dress, other clothes and home furnishings, for example, tulle. For this case, we have selected several popular methods with which you can wash off rust from white fabrics. Choose a method to taste and go for it:

  • Lemon acid... To remove rust in this way, you need to take citric acid (20 grams), pour it into half a glass of water and stir until the acid is completely dissolved. Heat the resulting mixture in an enamel bowl, without boiling, and then dip the part of the product subject to contamination there and soak for 5 minutes. Hyposulfate can fully replace acid, only we dissolve it in a glass of water.
  • Wine acid. For this method, you will need tartaric acid and salt in equal proportions. Combine the components and stir until a slurry is formed, which must be diluted a little with water. Distribute the resulting mixture over the problematic part of the product, put in a transparent container located in the sun. When there are no stains left, rinse thoroughly and wash the item as usual.



  • Means for removing rust from plumbing. This recipe is only suitable for cleaning white cotton garments. In order for the rust to disappear, you need to apply the product to the contaminated area, rub until foaming, rinse thoroughly with plenty of water, and then wash the product according to the washing instructions. This method helps to remove even obsolete dirt.
  • Hydrochloric acid. To remove rust from white things, we need a 2% hydrochloric acid solution. This solution must be poured into a container, only the contaminated area should be lowered there, and the thing should be left until the traces of rust have completely disappeared. Prepare a rinse solution while you wait. Take about 3 tablespoons of ammonia and add them to a liter of water, when the thing is cleaned, you should rinse it in the resulting solution.



Remove rust from colored clothing

It is more problematic to remove traces of rust from colored items. This process has a direct relationship with the dye, which is not always resistant to the effects of some agents. Therefore, below we have collected There are several ways that you can help wipe rust stains off any fabric:

  • Vinegar - one of the universal remedies, as it allows you to get rid of rust not only from white, but also from colored fabric. It is important that the materials are acid resistant. To prepare the product, dissolve 2 tablespoons of vinegar in 1 glass of water and pour this solution into a heating container. Then dip the place of contamination in hot, but not boiling liquid and hold for 5 minutes. Then, first rinse the item with clean cold water, and then repeat the rinse in a solution of water and ammonia. Dissolve the ammonia in a liter of water. After these steps, it is recommended to wash the item as usual.
  • Acetic acid. This product can help fight dirt by mixing 7 liters of warm water with 5 tablespoons of acid. Soak the item in this solution for 12 hours. Then wash the product as usual.

Thanks to its properties, acetic acid will refresh the color of the garment and fix the dye in the fabric, which will prevent fading and fading of your clothes.



  • Onion. We pass the onion through a meat grinder until a homogeneous liquid mass is formed. Add 35 ml of glycerin and apply the resulting mixture to the rust. We wait for about 3 hours, remove the excess with a paper napkin, wash the product with our hands. After that, wipe the onion-treated areas with a lemon wedge to eliminate the unpleasant odor. At the end of all procedures, the product must be washed as usual.
  • A mixture of acids. Take 5 grams of oxalic acid and 5 grams of acetic acid, dissolve with a glass of water, heat this liquid. Dip the problem part of the thing in the solution for 3 hours. After that, do not forget to rinse and wash the product as usual. This recipe is perfect for removing even stubborn stains.


How do I clean my jeans?

Jeans are one of the most comfortable wardrobe items that we use for everyday wear and walking around the city. What to do if your favorite jeans are stained with rust?

Cleaning methods:

  • Anti-scale agent. Effectively removes rusty marks from denim garments with descaling agent. Take a sponge or cloth, immerse it in this liquid and soak the dirt well. Set the item aside for 10-15 minutes and then wash it.
  • Lemon juice or acid... The previously described method of cleaning products from rust using lemon juice or acid is also suitable for denim fabrics. We apply juice to the soiled part, dry it with an iron or hair dryer and wash the thing.
  • Vinegar with salt... Mix vinegar with salt until a thin gruel is formed. Spread the mixture over the contaminated area and let stand for several hours. After the procedure, rinse, send to wash in standard mode.
  • Hyposulfite. To deal with traces of rust on light denim clothes, you should prepare a hyposulfite solution: dilute 15 grams in a glass of water. Dip the stained area into the hot liquid and hold in it until the traces of rust disappear. After cleaning, rinse the product in water at room temperature.
  • Oxalic acid and potash. Dissolve half a glass of acid and a quarter of a glass of potash separately in water, mix the resulting liquid and add water to half a liter. Soak jeans in a heated solution directly in the place of contamination. Remove the product after a few minutes. Wash treated fabric with a few drops of ammonia or a pinch of baking soda.

To clean dirt from a jacket or woolen outerwear, you can use any of the methods that are convenient for you. Before using the products, it is important to clean the product from dirt and dust and try to process an inconspicuous area, to protect yourself from unpleasant consequences.

  • Soap and glycerin. Mix water, soap and glycerin in a 1: 1: 1 ratio, rub the stain with the mixture and stand for 24 hours. After processing, wash in the usual way.
  • Lemon and hydrogen peroxide. Soak contamination with lemon juice, swab in hydrogen peroxide and rinse under cool running water.
