В английском языке, в отличие от русского, у существительных не так много падежей - их всего два. Первый называют общим, второй - притяжательным. Второй узнается очень просто - после имени собственного или нарицательного ставится апостроф и окончание «-s», причем это слово отвечает на вопросы «Чей? Чье? Чья? Чьи?».

Теперь самое главное: зачем нужно это грамматическое правило?

Притяжательный падеж используется, когда есть необходимость обозначить принадлежность к чему-либо. К примеру, показать, что эта книга вашего друга (my friend’s book) или что речь идет не о будущем нации, а о будущем конкретной девушки (the girl’s future).

Обратите внимание на одну особенность! Если существительное во множественном числе имеет окончание «-s», то «s» после апострофа не ставится.

К примеру, «a girl’s life» (переводится «жизнь девочки»), students’ future («будущее студентов»).
